Mitch opened her front door. He stepped in first, turned on the lights, and checked each room. “Nothing to worry about here. I was sure Justin had done a good job, but we can’t be too careful.” He pulled Sara into his arms. “We’ll be around.” He touched the gold heart on her bracelet. “Don’t forget, don’t even take it off in the shower.”

“I won’t.”

He kissed her, and she snuggled against his body. Daren had told her good-bye in the car, now Mitch. After a minute, Mitch stepped away. His brilliant blue eyes stared into hers. “Good-bye for now, love. Don’t take any unnecessary chances.”

She nodded and watched him leave. He locked the door as he went out. Sara went to the windows and peaked through the slit in the curtain, watching the car drive out of sight. When she turned, she studied her living room. It was all familiar, but she had changed, and it didn’t feel the same.

Tired, and knowing she had a long day in front of her, she crawled into bed. Tomorrow, she’d go to school and ask for a leave for the rest of the year. There were only about five more weeks, so hopefully they’d grant her the time. By summer she’d know if she planned to return or quit. Then, she needed to contact Ellen and Morgan about meeting at Jessup’s Bar and Grill. A shiver of fear brushed across her skin. She’d never dealt with traitors or spies.

Still, she’d be safe, she reassured herself. Her finger touched the cool, gold heart and a sense of calmness washed over her.
